Protecting Your Baby from Day One
When your baby is born, one of the first things healthcare providers recommend is a Hepatitis B shot. This vaccine is very important for keeping your baby healthy and safe. While Hepatitis B can be passed from mother to baby if the mother currently has Hepatitis B, it can also be passed to newborn babies by unclean hands or touching Hepatitis B infected surfaces.
What is Hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is a serious illness that attacks the liver. The liver is an organ that helps clean your blood and fight infections. Babies and young children who get Hepatitis B can have it for their whole life, which can cause big health problems later.
Why is the Hepatitis B vaccine reccomended for babies?
- Hepatitis B spreads easily – Babies can catch it from family members who don’t know they have it
- Young bodies are at highest risk – 9 out of 10 babies who get Hepatitis B will have it forever
- It works best early – The vaccine is most effective when given right after birth
- It prevents serious illness – The shot protects against liver damage, liver cancer, and even death
- It’s safe and proven – Millions of babies have safely received this vaccine for over 30 years
The Benefits
Getting the Hepatitis B vaccine gives your baby:
- Lifelong protection when they complete the full series of shots
- A healthy start without worrying about this dangerous virus
- Safety at school and play as they grow up
- Peace of mind for your whole family
When Your Baby Gets the Shot
Your baby will get the first shot at the hospital, usually within 24 hours of birth. They will get two more shots as they grow – one at 1-2 months old and one at 6-18 months old.
