Women are often the first to care for everyone around them, but the last to make time for themselves. As a busy mom and Dental Director, I understand. Between work, family responsibilities, appointments, school activities, and everyday stress, dental care can easily get pushed aside until pain or discomfort appears.
Many people do not realize that oral health is connected to overall health. Cavities, gum disease, and dental infections can affect more than just the mouth. They can impact sleep, eating, confidence, and daily comfort. Sometimes, the mouth can even be one of the first places where signs of other health problems appear.
For pregnant women, oral health becomes even more important. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause swollen or bleeding gums, increased sensitivity, and a higher risk of dental problems. While these changes are common, they should not be ignored. Regular dental visits during pregnancy are safe and can help support the health of both mother and baby.
The good news is that small habits can make a big difference. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, drinking water, eating balanced meals, and keeping regular dental appointments all help protect oral health.
As healthcare providers, we encourage women to care for themselves the same way they care for others. Taking care of your smile is not just about appearance, it is part of taking care of your overall health and well-being.
This women’s health month, let’s take time for ourselves as women to care for the smiles our families and friends put on our faces every day!
